The underground of San Clemente Basilica.
A few meters away from the Colosseum, in the basement of the San Clemente basilica, rises an extraordinary archaelogical complex. It is a kind of walk backwards through the time: we have the opportunity to visit a stratification of buildings on three levels, one over the other. The deepest level, dates back to the first century A.D. is occupied by the structures of an industrial and a residential building, in which there was also a Mithraeum. The intermediate floor, between the late fourth and early fifth century A.D. takes the form and connotation of an early Christian Basilica. The top level, of the XII century, corresponds to the actual Basilica.
